On the site of a quasi-abandoned US Navy base, now stands a Bay area favorite for thrills and spills. Alameda skatepark kicks ass - pretty much everyone agrees.
We were trying to find out who built this park, and it turns out it was a semi-renegade thing. Do-it-yourself w/ a little help from the local government. Apparently, the local kids were all fired up to get together $200k to build this 15,000 sq ft monster. A landscape architect named Tom Arie-Donch reportedly came along and convinced the kids that all they'd need was $50k if they could get the materials [thanks to Home Depot!] and a bunch of strong backs to slam the thing together. The city kicked in $50k and helped them rip through the permits, etc. and it was done! Compare that to Santa Barbara's 10 year standoff w/ over-conservative red tape slingers and you realize just how stoked out the Bay Area skaters really were...
Bay area rippers have TONS of options besides this park. To name just a couple, take a look at Healdsburg, Santa Rosa, Novato, Petaluma, Redwood City, SF's Crocker, Palo Alto, Milpitas and Ripon... The list goes on and on - the Bay's a good place to skate these days.
Directions: Take the 880 Freeway into the northwestern area of Oakland. Exit Broadway and head south. Almost immediately, you'll head directly under the freeway [south side of the fwy] to the onramp for the Webster Tube - take the tube south into Alameda. Make a right [west] on Atlantic Avenue, and make another right [north] on Main Street. Then make a left on W. Midway [west], followed by another right on Monarch Street. Take Monarch until it dead ends into W. Red Line. The park is in the northwest corner.
