Downey Skatepark

* Outdoor: 'Crete
* Free
* Trannie / Street
* Rating: Independent Grinds

Also known as "Independence skatepark" - behold the new skatepark in Downey!

"Opened Nov '02 after 15 months of city meetings and design sessions - which included all the local talent, yours truly, and Frank Hurata pro skater."

"The surface is just right, not too smooth or coarse, good glide. The transitions are beautiful. No sharp radius here - the park flows! Nearby city parks include Bell Gardens, Paramount, Bellflower, South Gate, Pico Rivera, and Whittier."

- Jim Fiala: Aug '03

Directions: Downey is a community in central LA, near Bellflower. It's right in the middle of the triangle formed by the 5, 710, and 105 freeways. There are a million ways to get there, but from the 105, exit Bellflower Blvd and head north. You'll cross Imperial highway, then Independence Park and the skatepark will be on your left.

^ I know this park was built in
2002, but this bowl sucks.
There's nothing worse than a shallow
round bowl w/ no features - lazy design!
If you can't go with a kick ass pool,
like in W. Anaheim, at least add
some creative features like Burbank.
