Montebello Skatepark

* Outdoor: 'Crete
* Free
* Trannie / Street
* Rating: Got it goin' on!

Just a few years ago, the LA area had ZERO skateparks. Nada. These days, almost every 'burb in the 'hood has a park - the birth of Montebello skatepark in Oct '02 is just the latest link in the chain.

The design is a little simple, but I think this park has one of the better layouts in CA, and shows some sound thinking on the part of designers Purkiss Rose [714.871.3638]. It's not that it's a ridiculous all street park, or an over the top trannie zone - in fact, it hits a near-perfect spot right in the middle!

Yes this park could be gnarlier, or more creative, but the features serve all types of skaters and connect together with very few hang ups. You start w/ knee-high ledges for the flat-landers, then you've got big rails for the street gnars, then you've got a boosty pyramid for the air borne, leading to some speed catcher trannie, and a separate concrete miniramp. Good flow, something for everyone, distinct sections for fewer crash-ups... good job!

For some other parks in the area, take a look at Pico Rivera, a crazy bowl at Bellflower, the lock-down at Bell Gardens, the greatest hits at Fullerton, and more lines at La Habra.

Directions: There are several ways to get to this park, but one way is to take the 605 freeway - between the 5 and 60 freeways - toward East LA. Exit Whittier Blvd and head west. You'll cross a "river"/aqueduct, 2nd St, 3rd St, etc., cross Montebello St, and then you'll hit Montebello Park on your left - home of the skatepark. If you hit 18th/19th St, you've gone too far!

^ Street scenes at the new
park in Montebello.
Note the flatlander ledges
in the background...

^ Thomas Bonilla
blasts one of two
hits on the wall that
catches your speed
from the street course.

^ You can have
all the "Boom
Boom Huck Jams"
you want... but
Julian Rameriz knows
what REAL skating is
all about. Shut off
the TV, save your money,
just get on board and
ride, ride, RIDE!!!
This will NEVER be
another FAT-ASS,
SPECTATOR sport!!!

^ You got your
standard mini-hubba
fun box, too. Thomas
here, on that 5050 tip!

^ Whereas a lot of parks dump
your speed into a brick wall,
Montebello's design gives you
some trannie to catch your
speed and send you into the air
or back onto the street course...

^ SHITEO: Danny
Gonzales gulps down
fresh air after blasting
off the pyramid.

^ SHITEO: Here's
Thomas brother
- Felipe Bonilla -
with a backside ollie
in one of the only
concrete miniramps in
CA.

^ It still looks like a cage,
but with no pad-nannies and
an open door policy, this
park is pretty cool about the
rules...

^ This raw-street scene
is located near the park
by the bathrooms.
