South Bay YMCA Skatepark

* Outdoor: Asphalt / Wood
* Pay: $6 per 2 hr sesh
* Trannie / Street
* Rating: Y's up in Chula Vista

This here is the first installment of the South Bay YMCA skatepark review... the pics below are of a temporary version of the park that's up now [Apr '02], and originally opened for ripping in Nov '01.

"These ramps were used in the 2001 X-Games. The park is small now, but this summer I am making a huge park with the Y. It will be about the same size as Mission Valley YMCA."

- Aaron Churder: Mar '02

The park is currently 6,000 sq ft [about 30% smaller than a your average public concrete park]. Although the ramps are from the X-Games, the actual builder/designer is Vertical Productions Inc., or VPI [707.263.7127].

South Bay Y has attracted a lot of local attention. Despite limited hours [they close at 5 PM everyday], we hear tons of locals session this spot regularly. It was also the host to the first stop of "The Next Cup," an Osiris-backed AM competition that tours CA, throwing contests on weekends throughout the year.

We also hear that the Chula Vista might throw together a big ole' outdoor park later this year. Beyond that, you've got a grip of other parks to sink your teeth into, including skateparks in the San Diego area in Coronado, Robb Field, and a private park at Skateboard Heaven in downtown SD. There are always the other YMCAs - Mission and Encinitas. Heading north out of town, you could also hit Santee and the must-skate Ollie House in Temecula.

Directions: From San Diego, take Interstate 805 south to the H Street exit and head east. Make a left onto Paseo Ranchero, followed by a right onto Paseo Magda. The skatepark is on the left. The address is 1201 Paseo Magda. For more info call the park direct 619.421.8805.
