San Luis Obispo

* Rating: Hand-me-down skatepark...

Before we start trash-talking San Luis Obispo's park, we should confess that we've never skated it, and we haven't even seen it since Mar'00 when these pics were taken. We did make some calls in Dec'00 to see if this fine park is still around [and it is], and we think these shots are probably still accurate... As always, no disrespect to local gangsters that call this place "home." And we should probably say "thanks" to the city for doing what they can. It's not great, but at least it's something.

Our official stance is that this park doesn't look too good to us. It's an obvious "hand-me-down" gesture from the city - a tennis court turned meager park. The mini ramp is the only "hesh" element, but it looks beat to shit. The rest of the park looks like makeshift rails, boxes, and banks. They looked barely rideable when we were there, but the local tech-dawgs seemed to be making the best of an otherwise feeble situation. Maybe we don't know what we're talking about... any feedback for us?

Oh yeah, we think this might be one of those "monitor" situations. Be sure to bring pads and prepare for odd hours and locked gates.

Overall, our recommendation is to blow this place off. If you're local hit Grover Beach. That park is great and it's close to San Luis. You've also got Santa Maria's YMCA and Lompoc nearby. One hour south will get you Santa Barbara's Skater's Point, Ojai, and Carpinteria. Until we hear otherwise, no reason to hit up SLO. But if you must...

Directions: Get on the 101 in San Luis Obispo and exit at the Morro Bay / Highway 1 off-ramp [in San Luis...]. Follow the off-ramp to Santa Rosa Ave (Highway 1), and head north-west about a mile. Look for a parking lot on the right side of the road. This should get you there, but if you have problems email us, and we'll post any suggestions.
