Parc Jarry

* Outdoor: 'Crete / Metal

* Trannie / Street
* Rating: Lumpy and dumpy

Trying to find a decent skatepark in the city of Montreal was impossible - Parc Jarry is a prefect example.

On paper, this park SHOULD be sweet: It's got a miniramp, a bowl, some concrete transition features... no real street stuff, but it COULD have been a good park - but it isn't.

The concrete is uneven and rough, but pretty much rideable. The rounded Rosa-style walls are probably the best part of the park. The bowl - on the other hand - is the worst I've ever seen. No coping, rough surfaces, gnarly transitions... almost unrideable, and definitely not fun. The metal mini ramp seemed "sticky" - no sloppy, sliding turns on this thing. If you don't drop straight back down, your wheels would stick and you'd get pitched to the flat bottom... urrrgh.

While we don't have much love for this place, it's one of the "best" parks in Montreal - the other parks really suck. Some of your options include Rosemont and Pie IX. There are some fun miniramps in Parc Ahuntsic [our favorite spot in Montreal], as well as another really crappy effort in Dorval. For parks that don't suck, head over to the "south bank" and check out Longueuil, Boucherville, and Universe [in Repentigny].

Directions: In Montreal, take Highway 40 to Boul. St. Laurent exit, and head east. Make a right [west] onto Rue Jarry Ouest, and the Parc Jarry will be on the left. You should be able to see the skatepark from the street.

^ Witness the sadness
that IS Parc Jarry

^ I hate this
bowl. I mean I
really hate it.

^ Check them nipples!
This is one of the
best parts of this
park, actually.

^ That's the bowl
in the foreground...

^ Oh yeah, besides the fact
that this ramp was real
sticky, it's also got metal
screws that rip chunks out of
your wheels...

^ The park does have
lights... night sessions
are a good thing
considering it's
over 32 degrees
Celsius during the day
in the summer.

^ At least the graffiti
was cool.
