Brattleboro Skatepark

* Outdoor: 'Crete / Asphalt
* Free
* Trannie / Street
* Rating: McGarbage

Vermont is beautiful, but the Brattleboro skatepark is hideous. The McPark deal just sucks. Not because they didn't spend enough cash, but usually because they spent it w/ the wrong group of builders/designers, and they probably didn't know what to build in the first place...

Just east of Brattleboro, in Bennington VT, there's another McPark. While it was pre-built by someone else, it also sucks, but for different reasons. The Bennington park's ramps are bigger [which is good], but it's still put together by people that know nothing about skateparks.

Just like Bennington, Brattleboro has zero flow. A good park has significant ramps on the perimeter - and throughout - that allow a skater to generate and maintain speed across the park and back again. You shouldn't really have to push that much. These parks obviously didn't even consider that concept when they were built.

Again, it's rarely money, but know how that makes the difference. Look at what Donald Oregon did w/ their "tiny, little park." It doesn't take a lot of space or big bucks to do the right thing, but it sure as hell isn't going to happen in a McPark environment.

Let this be a lesson to the park planners out there - go w/ experience! Hire experienced skaters [that means more than asking a local 10 yr old what he thinks a perfect park is]. Do it right, or you'll get stuck w/ these slack-jobs in your town for another 10 years.

Directions: Brattleboro is located in southern Vermont. Take Interstate 91 to Exit 1 [Highway 5], and head north. Make a left [west] onto Falt Street, and the skatepark is on the left. For more info, call the park direct at 802.254.5990.

^ VTs Brattleboro is
a numbing McPark

^ See that asphalt that
connects the riding
surface to the pre-fab
kicker? That packs down
over time and makes these
ramps harder and harder
to ride over time...
Asphalt sucks, and so do
pre-fab ramps!

^ This spine wouldn't
be too bad if it had
some flow on either side
of it...
